Music Video Initial Research

Chosen song: Favourite Record by Fall Out Boy. This is a song that I have grown up listening to, and so it has more personal meaning to me. The song is focuses on the memories of a couple who spent a lot of time together over a summer period, and they also danced a lot, which is a reoccurring theme in the song.

In my music video, which will be an animatic, it will be narrative (story) based. The story will focus on two main characters, a couple, which will be myself and my significant other Kai. The narrative focuses on what I imagined would happen in the song. This will include lots of dancing, a theme of record disks, and lots of vibrant colours, primarily orange and blue, which is the colours that represent us.

Due to being an animatic, and not an animation, the movement in the video will be more simplistic, the screen moving across a larger image, or a character moving as a whole across the screen rather than animated walking. Due to not animating each movement in such detail like in a normal animation, I will be able to spend more time on creating more detailed and colourful backgrounds and characters.

I was inspired to make an animatic for two reasons. The first reason is the possibilities of what I can create in an animatic. When animating, you are not limited by locations, characters, time, or just generally anything that could possibly limit you when filming a normal music video. Due to this, I have much more creative potential, and I can include whatever I want, whether it is realistic or not. I can also confidently put myself and my partner into the story as main characters, without having to worry about our acting skills or what we are actually able to do. The second reason is because I had always been inspired by animatics I had seen on YouTube. I had watched lots of animatics and I was always amazed by them and inspired to make my own one day. So this was a perfect opportunity for me to do so for this music video.

I aim to be able to create a narrative story about Kai and myself. The story will focus on us spending time together, and doing what I always thought would happen in the song. Also, due to the main characters being Kai and myself, it makes this video much more personal and special to me.
